Our first competition is coming right up! I would have written this info sooner, but I was out of the country for a couple weeks and hadn't received the info until a few days ago! But here it finally is!!!We will be at Tumwater High School for our first competition! The girls have been practicing hard and I trust they will do very well!Some info about this competition is:
Directions

Travel south on I-5 and take the Tumwater Blvd exit, Exit 101. Stay in the left hand lane. Turn left at the stop light on Tumwater Blvd. At the next light, turn left on Linderson Way. At the stop sign, turn right on Israel Road. You will see the school on the left. You will want to turn in the parking lot just past the reader board and before the tennis courts. Parents will direct you as to where to drop off your participants and where to park.

Concessions

Concessions will be open as soon as the doors open for teams with breakfast type items and then the usual junk food—pizza, nachos, hot dogs…Yum. We hope to have the Bumper Sticker guys will be there again and hopefully pictures/action shots. Here is the logo for the competition shirts. We will also have flowers and DVD’s as well as a Thanksgiving raffle basket.

Admission
$7.00 for adults

$5.00 for students and seniors

Children under 5 free

The competition begins at 12:00pm and we are 11th in the line up. It is always hard to say what time exactly we will be on, so, in this case, I would encourage you to be there close to noon. 12:30pm should be safe!

A few things:

-I understand there will be SAT's going on during the mornings of some of our competitions; typically in the past this has always worked out. The driller just comes straight to the competition when she is done with her test, we will get her hair braided, make up put on and she's good to go! Please don't stress about this, I totally understand SAT's are important and that is why I always want it to work out as easily as possible!

-We maybe also compete 1 or 2 times in February; that is still TBD. But please keep that month open, as we are also preparing for State so will be busy with practices as it is.

-Lock-in's always happen on the Saturday BEFORE competition. Please keep that in mind and note that in your calendar as well. Times are TBD but are typically 5-7 hours long.

Homecoming 2010

Homecoming is here! This will be such a fun week for the girls at school, and a fun yet tough week at drill! We have some more cleaning to do on this drill, but by Friday, I know it will be GREAT and ready to perform! This drill is by far my favorite one so far, and I can't wait for everyone to see it! It's amazing!

Please, come watch your wonderful daughters perform at the Homecoming assembly at 1:30pm at NHS and/or at the football game that night (Friday, October 15).

I hope to see you there! And remember, it's HOMECOMING to be sure to be spirited!!!!

School has Begun!

Now that school is in full swing, I thought I would recap on our summer practices.

Everything went very well and smoothly! We did a lot of running, conditioning and stretching which has contributed to the girls endurance, strength and flexibility. We worked on Fight Song and our 1st Drill; both are looking great! We did bonding activities that brought us all closer and it's really been a pleasure being the coach of the 2010-2011 NHS Drill Team! I've loved getting to know the newbies and continuously getting to know my returners. The atmosphere has been a very positive and fun one and I am confident that it will last throughout the year!

Please, come watch the girls perform the 1st Drill at the assembly on September 10 at 1:30 in the main gym. I know they would love for family/friends to see it, especially since this is the only time the will perform it! Then we will be off and running into Homecoming Drill!

It was great to see many of you at the Fall Sports Kickoff Meeting and I look forward to seeing you at the Football Game and Disco Dance on Friday!!

Summer Practice Begins Soon

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer break!

Summer practices are just around the corner! I am really excited!

I know this is going to be a very fun year with some change and of course still some tradition, so be ready! Strength and endurance workouts will be a big part of this years' summer training, so make sure drillers are getting ready and doing a little something active over the break. Plenty of water should be brought to every practice to keep hydrated (no pop) and snacks for energy. I am getting myself ready as I will be right there leading the workouts, so I have to be sure to keep up and ahead! :)

Kentridge Invitational

Please come help and support our girls this Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the Kentridge Invitational!

The girls will be performing the Basketball Drill (like at the last invitational) and I know they will do great (again!). They have been working hard on cleaning some things up and I am excited to see them perform! The spirit and energy from our fans was GREAT last time, so I can't wait to see how it will be this time!

Upcoming Invitationals

Basketball Drill is being perfected for our upcoming invitational! I hope everyone is as excited as I am! After winning our last competition, we have that to live up to! I really believe that we can do it again! The girls are working hard and I know that they want another 1st place trophy, so if they keep attending practices and staying encouraged, then it will happen!

I say "if they keep attending practices" because before winter break we seemed to have some issues with girls not showing up, not bringing notes and me knowing that they were at school (I get a daily report showing attendance). This not only caused concern for me, but also other drillers. It is very discouraging to the girls when their teammates aren't showing up to practice. Please encourage your daughters that drill team, along with school, is a priority and that it is something they chose to do. So far after the break attendance has been good, and I hope that it stays this way. If I become concerned about a particular driller, I will email parents individually.

With that said, let's cheer on our girls and get excited about the upcoming invitational! Here's what January looks like:

Knights Drillers are Winners!

I am pleased to announce that our Newport Knights Drillers won 1st place at this past weekends Tumwater Invitational! This was our first competition of the year and I am SO proud of the girls! The worked very hard and through all the ups and downs of the preparation, they ended up doing terrific!

The girls are now working on the next drill, the "Basketball Drill" and it is already looking amazing. I can't wait for them to perform it at the basketball games and then at the next competitions in January.

We are in competition mode! The girls are preparing for their first invitational which is coming up in a couple of weeks! I am very excited and believe that if the girls put in 100% of their effort, we will do well!

Seahawks Game?!

As many of you may have already heard, our girls are going to be performing at a Seahawks game! That's right, they will perform this Sunday, October 11th! I am very excited for them! This is a great opportunity, and knowing what it is like to be out on that field in front of 67,000 people, it is an incredible experience!

Here are some details:

We will be meeting at 7:45 am in the Newport Parking Lot (lower lot by the field) and will leave by 8:00 am sharp. Because there is not enough ASB money for a bus, we will need parent drivers (I have the forms that need to be filled out). If you are willing to drive some girls to Qwest Field at 8:00 am and pick up at around 2:45 pm, please email me at: lebe524@yahoo.com Thank you in advance if you are willing to do this!!
At 8:30 am, we will be on the field (at Qwest Field-home of the Seahawks!!) running through/practicing the performance with the other 5 schools that will be performing AND the Seagals
After practice, the girls will be fed and then we will go enjoy the pre-game festivities in the exhibition hall.
During half time (approx. 2:30 pm) the girls will perform
After performing we will head back to Newport High School

Extra facts:

The girls will wear their uniforms
This is not "mandatory" but it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and would love to have all the girls there!
The girls will be performing part of Homecoming drill (about 1 minute of it) and also a group dance that all the schools and the Seagals will all do together
As I mentioned, the girls will be fed, so no money/sack lunch is needed
This performance will not be on TV, but will be on the big screens at the game
I will take photos, and Seahawks photographers may be snapping shots as will-if so, they will be posted on the Seahawks website and I will let you know if and when they do!

I am very much looking forward to this and I think all the girls are excited, too! It is very special to have been invited to perform at the game and a big thanks goes out to Sherri Thompson-the Seagals Director.

Hooray Newport Drill!

First Football Game!

School is now in full swing which means shorter practices and best of all, PERFORMANCES!!! The girls performed for the first time this past Friday, September 4th during half time of the first football game. They performed the "Fight Song" and I must say, they did a great job! I was in the stands cheering them on (it was a pretty fun feeling being back in those stands after a few years!) and was so proud of them!

Next up, this Friday, September 11, the girls will perform the "First Drill" during the welcome back assembly. It will start at 1:46pm and run approximately 2:30. Parents are welcome! I will try my best to get out of work to make it-it's looking pretty good!

I am very excited!

School Starts August 31st!

I can hardly believe how fast the summer has gone by! With school starting next Monday, August 31st, the girls will have a new practice schedule.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 4:00-6:00pm Outside Gym

Wednesday: 7:00-9:00pm Main Gym

Friday: Football Game or No Practice (I encourage the girls to go to away games, as we are a "spirit group" and it is great to support your team!)

I feel confident that the girls will do great at their first performance-which will be at "Rally Night" if we end up having it. It is scheduled for Thursday, September 3rd at 7:00pm, but that is not set in stone yet. If that does not happen, then the girls will perform for the "Fight Song" for the first time at the first home football game, Friday, September 4th! They will perform the first drill at the assembly on Friday, September 11th. I cannot wait to see them out on the field and in that gym!

I am such a proud coach! The captains have been great leaders and the team has been working well together-which shows in how well the drill is looking! I can't wait for all the parents to see it!

Almost Time for School

Well, summer is slowly coming to an end and I can comfortably say that the girls are doing great! The drill is looking very good and I cannot wait to see them perform for the first time! As for now, it looks like it might be at the Rally Night (September 3-Thursday) but that event is still TBD. If that falls through, then the girls will perform the traditional "Fight Song" at the first home football game, and then the drill they have been perfecting all summer at the first assembly September 11. I know they will do great each time they perform-whether it be the "Fight Song" or the actual drill. I am a proud coach!

A few parents/drillers have been asking me about practice times once school starts. I will be making the announcement at the parent "meet and greet" on Monday, August 24 (5:30pm if you hadn't heard about it). If you cannot make it, I will post the times here in my next blog. However, I hope all parents can make it as I look forward to meeting everyone!

August is here!

Our 2nd week of practice has begun. After another hot Monday practice (although finally cooler than last week) I can easily say that I am quite pleased with the teams progress! We missed last Wednesday to the extreme heat, and cut a few of the other practices short, yet the girls are doing great and coming along with the drill just fine. I am pleasently surprised at how clean we are already looking so early off! Great job girls, keep it up...and State, here we come!!!

1st Practice

We finally had our first practice Monday night! I must say, it was great to finally meet all the girls and to get started. It brought back a lot of memories from my drill team days, and I'm glad so many traditions have still been kept alive...i.e. the infamous "Fight Song!"
It will definitely take me a little time to learn all 34 names, but I have a bunch down already! The girls did a great job, especially considering the crazy heat! Wednesday is supposed to be even hotter, so hopefully we won't melt out on the field!
I want to thank all you girls for welcoming me so kindly, and I look forward to working with you all and getting to know you better!

Hello!

My name is Leona Beutel and I am the new coach for the Newport High School Drill Team! I am so excited to get started-to meet the girls, the parents and to get practices in full swing! I plan to have a really fun year with crowds roaring at school performances, superiors at invitationals and finally the big win at State! But it's a team effort, so let's all have a great time, work hard and most important, always "keep your chin up!" :)
